Celebrating a Milestone of Dedication at Mount Isa Judo Academy

Judo Queensland (JQ) proudly acknowledges the exceptional commitment and enduring legacy of the Mount Isa Judo Academy (MIJA) following a week of landmark celebrations and intensive coaching clinics in the state’s North West.

JQ’s representative Meladee Stackpoole travelled to Mount Isa from November 22nd to 30th to participate in the activities, marking a significant show of support for one of Queensland’s most established regional clubs.

Elite Coaching and Community Engagement

The week was highlighted by a series of high-calibre coaching sessions, designed to benefit judoka of all levels:

• International Expertise: JQ facilitated the participation of Olympic representative and Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist, Sensei Stewart Brain, and French Sho Dan, Sensei Audrey, who delivered multiple intensive classes.

• Regional Support: Our representative provided hands-on support, coaching, and assistance in classes alongside local stalwarts Sensei Don Burrow and Sensei Puck Gibson, helping to manage large sessions with up to 30 juniors and 15 seniors.

• Local Event Participation: The visit also included assisting with a local competition, contributing to scoring, and presenting trophies, reinforcing the connection between the club, JQ, and the broader Mount Isa community.

Celebration Night and Life Membership Honour

The week culminated in a memorable celebration on November 29th, attended by local dignitaries, including Mayor Peta McRae.

• Formal Acknowledgment: JQ presented an official plaque to MIJA’s President, John Ivers, publicly recognising the club's long-standing success and contribution to Queensland Judo.

• Showcase: The night featured a special demonstration by senior and junior students, highlighting the academy’s successful training programs, much to the delight of the attending parents.

• Sensei Don Burrow Awarded Life Membership: The most significant event of the evening was the formal presentation of a Life Membership to the highly respected Sensei Don Burrow. This honour acknowledges his decades of tireless work, coaching, and dedication to the sport and the club. JQ extends its deepest congratulations to Sensei Burrow for this well-deserved recognition.

“To maintain a vibrant and successful club in a regional centre for this period is a massive achievement, and one that Judo Queensland holds in the highest regard,” Meladee said. “The enthusiasm of the students and the dedication of the Senseis at Mount Isa Judo Academy are truly inspirational and embody the core values of our sport.”
